StrikeZone

by Julian Schenk

Come out with me: fishing routes along the coast of Northern Cyprus and up to 25 km into the open Mediterranean.

I'm Julian, 12, and I've been fishing since I was 5. I know the rocky ledges right off the coast, the wrecks and current edges further out, and when each fish bites. Rods, bait, sonar and boat are mine – all you need is a good mood and sunscreen.

This is my boat

Grey hull, a T-top for shade, a Mercury 115 Pro XS on the transom and rod holders all round. There is room for up to 5 people on board – enough space to cast without crossing lines.

  4. 4 · Your companyPartner, friend or parent – and required anyway for anyone under 18.
  5. 5 · One moreThe fifth seat. After that it gets too tight to fish properly, so five is the limit.

The moment the rod bends.

The drag screams, the line peels off, everyone on board stares at the water. That is exactly why I head out – and I stand next to you until the fish is in the net.

What bites here

Around Cyprus the Mediterranean is deep, clear and full of life – from tuna out on the open sea to sea bream on the bottom. What bites depends on season and weather. Tell me what you fancy and I'll plan the trip around it.

My home water

The sea off Northern Cyprus

Cyprus sits in the far east of the Mediterranean. Right outside my door the sea bed drops away fast – shallow sandy bays, rocky ledges and then the open, deep blue Levantine Basin. That mix is what makes fishing here so exciting.

700–1,500 mdepth out in the Cilician Basin

How far out do we go?

The coast is my living room, the open water my playground. How far we go depends on the trip, the wind and the swell – I decide where we fish.

Harbour on the north coast of Cyprus with boatsWhere

From Girne to the Karpaz peninsula

The best known grounds are around Girne (Kyrenia), off Famagusta and along the empty Karpaz peninsula. We start on the north coast and fish ledges, bays and harbour walls – I know the spots by heart.

Bay on the north coast of Cyprus from aboveWhen

Early morning and evening

At dawn and dusk the fish come close to shore to feed – those are the best hours. The big pelagics like tuna and bonito move across the open water mainly in the warm months from May to August.

Fishing rod over deep blue waterHow

Spinning rod, float, bottom rig

Classic spinning with bait-fish imitations, with a float or on the bottom. For bait we use shrimp, squid pieces or dough paste – everything is on board, you don't need to bring a thing.

School of fish in the clear MediterraneanWhat

From sea bream to tuna

Breams and gilthead, sea bass, barracuda, grouper and seasonally mackerel, bonito and tuna. Which fish is due when is shown in my bite calendar below.

Fishing from the shore with hook and line is possible in Northern Cyprus without a licence. For the boat trip we take care of everything else – you only need to turn up in a good mood. And to be honest: there is no catch guarantee, the sea has a say too.

Rocky coast of Northern Cyprus

I fish above more than 2,300 years of history

The ship of KyreniaOne of the oldest preserved merchant ships in the world lay off the coast of Girne – it sank around 300 BC with amphorae, almonds and millstones on board. Today it stands in the shipwreck museum inside Girne castle, ten minutes from the harbour.
Salamis near FamagustaRight by the sea lie the ruins of the ancient harbour city of Salamis, once the cultural centre of the island. A good stop for the day after your trip.
The same route as back thenThe merchant ships sailed between Cyprus, the Turkish coast and the Levant – exactly across the water where I troll my baits today.
Our secret weapon on board

Lowrance Pro 9: I see the fish before they bite

On the 9-inch screen you see live what happens under the boat: schools, single big fish, reef edges and wrecks – down to around 400 metres. That is why I don't head out blind, I head to the fish.

Predator on the reef
A single big fish on the edge – a fat arch on the display
11 kW instead of standardMore transmitting power means a clean picture where normal sounders show nothing but noise.
2Fish arches, not guessworkSingle fish appear as arches on the screen. I explain which arch is worth a cast.
3Find structure, don't search for itWrecks, ledges and plateaus are the restaurants of the sea. I run to them on purpose and save every good mark.
4Bait at the right depthI can see how deep the fish are holding – and put the bait exactly there instead of somewhere.
5Chart and spots on boardEvery good spot gets saved. That way each trip is a little better than the one before.
6Watch it liveYou stand next to the screen and see the catch coming. Kids often find that more exciting than the fishing itself.

For kids, families and guests

I'm twelve myself, so I explain fishing to kids the way I learned it: no jargon, plenty of patience, no pressure. If you have never held a rod before, you'll catch your first fish with me.

  • Children from 6 yearsWith an adult along – life jackets in children's sizes are on board.
  • Eye to eyeA twelve-year-old shows how it works, which takes the fear out of hooks and fish for any child.
  • Small groupsWe only head out with your family or your friends, never with strangers on board.
  • Short and just rightThe short trip is ideal for kids: around 3 hours, calm water, a break and a swim stop whenever you like.
  • German and EnglishBoth are spoken on board – for guests from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and further afield.

Frequently asked

Do I need experience?

No. I show you everything from casting to landing. The short trip is ideal for beginners.

Can children come along?

Yes, gladly – with an adult. Children's life jackets are on board.

Can I keep my catch?

Yes, within the applicable minimum sizes and closed seasons. I'll gut it for you on the spot if you like.

What happens in bad weather?

We move the trip to another day. If no other date works, we refund the amount you paid in full.

When is my booking binding?

With a direct Stripe booking, as soon as payment is received. A request by form or WhatsApp is non-binding until we confirm the date.
